material accidentally. You will want to make sure that this doesn’t happen so that any remaining bugs that go undetected in the mattress or box springs are trapped and cannot escape. Keep in mind that they can survive for well over a year without feeding a second time.
The use of cedar oil and cedar wood.
Bed bugs hate cedar wood. A by-product of cedar wood is cedar oil. You can spray affected areas, and unless the infestation is unusually bad, they should stay clear from the treated area for a while. If you can see them, contact spray them di- rectly for best results. The oil will suffocate them.
Contact spray them with isopropyl alcohol.
Keep 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol in small spray bottles and contact spray them when you see them. They will immediately run, dehydrate and eventually die.
Fumigation and spray bombs.
Fumigation and spray bombs are other methods to eradicate pests from your home or office location. This, however, can run into a considerable cost to you. Many times the procedure involves covering or encasing the entire facility or struc- ture in a tarp and injecting a gas that is known to be lethal to bed bugs. As a warn- ing or caution, you should ALWAYS make sure that there are no open flames when using certain gases or aerosol products.
Precautions when traveling.
As a preventative measure, you should always exercise caution and vigilance when traveling. Concerned travelers may want to get in the habit of checking the beds in hotel rooms (even bed and breakfast facilities) for any signs of bed bugs. This would include examination of the sheets, the upper and lower seams of the mattress, box springs, and the headboard. You may want to keep a travel flashlight handy. It is also a good idea to elevate suitcases and luggage off of the floor. You may want to place them on a luggage stand, table or counter top.
